The Four Levels of Jumpseat Leadership

Drawing on his 25-year military career, former work as a founding igniter at Simon Sinek Inc., and over 14 years partnering with organizations worldwide, Peter Docker is an in-demand leadership thought-leader. His high-energy, interactive, and tailored keynotes empower audiences to build cultures of leadership to accelerate and sustainably scale their businesses. Through sharing his Jumpseat Leadership framework, Docker delivers powerful messages on leading through change and fostering the next generation of leaders to make history-making outcomes possible for any business in any industry.

Docker’s military career spanned from professional pilot to leading an aviation training and standards organization, teaching postgraduates at the UK’s Defence College to flying the British prime minister. He served as a Royal Air Force senior officer, was a Force Commander during combat flying operations, and was deployed in service across the globe. Docker also led multi-billion-dollar international procurement projects and served as a crisis manager and former international negotiator for the UK government.

In 2011, Docker joined Simon Sinek as one of the founding “igniters” on Sinek’s team. He worked alongside Sinek for seven years, co-authoring Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team with him and David Mead. This step-by-step guide on how to discover your WHY is available across the world and has sold over 660,000 copies.

Docker’s most recent book is Leading from the Jumpseat and serves as the foundation of his keynote speeches and his consulting work through his company, Jumpseat Leadership. Client reviews

  • I don’t normally have much time for business consultants and leadership gurus. I have seen too many “preach and leave” characters who have the spin but no substance; telling us what we already know and rarely understanding the true businesses and commercial challenges.

Peter Docker is a rare exception.

From the moment he took to the stage he had the audience completely focused on his presentation. I watched the room carefully (as the organiser you are always looking for audience reaction); no one looked at their phone, no one left for a comfort break and no one looked disinterested. His commitment to the topic and to them was evident and he was an amazing speaker for us.

But he is so much more than just a keynote presenter.

As a mentor he is inspiring and extremely talented; helping people find their purpose and strength to achieve unexpected outcomes. As a person he is generous, empathetic and kind, he makes the people around him feel they can do just about anything.

  • Quotes from Human Resources Institute of New Zealand Conference 2014:

    • “Quality speakers are so good, and Peter is one of the best. Thoroughly inspiring and useful. Slick presentation that engaged you from the moment he stepped on stage.”
    • I found this talk one of the most enriching from a personal perspective and am already looking at hoe I can implement “why” in order to be an inspirational HR practitioner.
    • Amazing content, amazing speaker. He was the highlight for me and an added bonus was being able to attend the lunch with him to carry on the Why debate.
    • A really compelling presentation with so much to think about. Applicable everywhere I think.
  • I would like to thank you once again for your enthusiasm and for generously sharing your expertise with me at a time when our service was under threat of being merged or tendered. From the outset I have found you and your approach inspiring.  At a very challenging time in our department your interventions enabled me to anchor myself in my passion about my work, to lead my project and my team in a different way, and to remain positive throughout the process. I can honestly say that I now feel and believe that I can do more than I thought I could do before, and I have much greater confidence in myself as a leader.

  • Peter’s presentation was sensational – an inspiration to our delegates. The feedback I received from various delegates was all positive and I know that Peter had the opportunity to speak to a few of our member delegates, supplier partners and staff afterwards. The people that I spoke to said they found Peter to be engaging on stage, and that they could relate to his presentation on both a business and personal level.

Everyone enjoyed his story about the remarkable young man, Dylan Jones.

  • Occasionally, you meet a group of people who can truly inspire. Who bring you close to tears with their insight and understanding of the possibilities people have to become extraordinary. It’s rare to be blown away by a consultancy firm, even rarer still to meet some with the passion, enthusiasm and humanity of Why Not. We came away feeling honoured that they chose to work with us and help us become all we could be. Rare indeed.

  • Peter understands not only the concepts of the Golden Circle, but also has a very comprehensive and proven implementation program.  In other words, he can not only help an organization find their Why, he can partner with them to help bring it to life.  His vast leadership capabilities from his military background, coupled with global experience helping organizations flourish, make Peter a dynamic and flexible presenter.  He’s able to speak and create workshops on topics including leadership, culture, high performing teams and resilience – all based on the fundamentals of the Golden Circle and Start With Why.  Moreover, his company, Why Not, can follow-on to partner with organizations, enabling them to implement his approach to create breakthrough, sustainable performance.

  • Everything went very, very well, thank you. Peter was one of the highlights of the day – actually, the conference – judging by my first glance at our feedback forms.

I will also personally thank him separately – he didn’t experience how what he presented in the morning actually lead to discussions throughout the rest of the day, up to the concluding remarks of our CEO. His talk really hit home (kind as I expected, but much more so).

  • Peter is one of those guys that “gets it.”  His own experiences lead him to many of the same conclusions about leadership.  I’m proud that he has joined me to help share this message of Why and to help inspire people to do what inspires them.
