Human rights activist Samra Zafar joined us inside our boardroom to share her powerful story of escaping a decade of abuse, and how she uses her experiences to help others do the same.
Samra moved to Canada as a child bride in a forced marriage under the false pretense that she would be able to continue her education once settled. Unfortunately, all that Samra was promised was quickly taken away and she found herself in a new country, newly married and a soon-to-be new mom, with what felt like no rights.
Watch the video below to learn more about Samra’s story and how she was able to find the courage she needed to finally escape the cycle of abuse. She also details her experiences in her new bestselling memoir, A Good Wife.
In 2017, Zafar wrote an article about her personal experience with abuse for Toronto Life, which became the most-read article in Canada that year. In the same year, she delivered a TEDx talk, which was named an all-time top 10 talk on gender-based violence.
Samra is now an award-winning international speaker, author, scholar, and social entrepreneur who engages audiences around the world, speaking about collective resilience, authentic leadership, inclusive workplaces, youth, human rights, mental health, and more.
She also shared insight into the cycle of domestic abuse and why cultural competency for abuse survivors is crucial.
