Farah Perelmuter: change to happiness

“Life shouldn’t be complicated. The goal is simple: ‘Be Happy’.” This has become the mantra of Farah Perelmuter, CEO and co-founder of Speakers’ Spotlight (www.speakers.ca).
Speakers’ Spotlight is a speakers bureau that represents the highest-acclaimed: best-selling authors, athletes, politicians, comedians, adventurers, and truly inspiring individuals. The agency takes on a select number of speakers each year, but represents over 500 speakers from around the world with offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.
Farah’s business wasn’t always this successful. She and her husband, Martin, quit their well-paying jobs, moved into a small apartment and started their business in 1995. They were young, had no contacts, no staff, no office, meager savings, but determination, goals, and trust and belief in each other.
Why did they do it? Their current jobs were impeding on their lives – too busy to spend time together. Martin was a lawyer and Farah had just started her career in the advertising industry and hated her job. “I realized I needed a change when I was walking to work one day, and thought today would be a good day to get hit by a car so I don’t have to go into work.” Farah’s statement maybe a little drastic, but it is a reality that many people face in their career. She had the courage to change for the better, with the goal of "being happy" in mind. That simple realization has paid off 12 years later with Speaker’s Spotlight being one of Canada’s hottest speakers bureaus.
Farah and her husband beat the odds and created a business that flourished. To what does she attribute her success? (besides her husband) “Know what you want,” she says. “Set realistic, but high goals and do not deviate from what you want.”
Farah no longer dreads going into work every day, in fact, she adores it. Her life is simple – happy – she is able to balance work and spend time with her husband and two children at her leisure.
