Speaking Out
Conferences Energized by Successful Speakers
Supplement in The Globe and Mail (Spring 2004)
In 1995, Martin Perelmuter and his wife Farah
made some life altering decisions. The duo quit their jobs,
sold their home and then set up a new business Speakers
Spotlight. "Farah had been doing some marketing for a
speaker and she realized that there was an important niche
in the market that we could fill," say Perelmuter, who
left a career in corporate and commercial law.
Over the last decade, the company has become
one of the key players in the industry, representing over
300 speakers. Among their roster is environmentalist and broadcaster
Dr. David Suzuki, economist Dr. Sherry Cooper, comedian Dave
Broadfoot, Hockey Night in Canada host Ron Maclean and activist
Christopher Reeve. According to Perelmuter, currently the
hottest speaker in the country is Mike Lipkin, a motivator
and communicator who is president of Environics/Lipkin. "There
are a combination of reasons that Mike is so busy," says
Perelmuter. "Not only is he a terrific motivator, but
he also provides great content. There are some speakers who
are successful at pumping up the audience, but they dont
provide any tools or strategies that you can use once the
conference is over."
According to Perelmuter, where the speaker is
slotted into the conference is of tremendous importance. "You
have to decide what the speakers objective is. Do you
want them to open the conference and set the tone for the
meetings, or do they go at the end of the conference and fire
up the troops with an inspirational message?"
As for current trends in the industry, Perelmuter
says, "People always want to be entertained, but today
they are also more open to learning. The back to basics message
is very popular now. It turns out that technology isnt
the answer to everything and that trust and communication
within a company are increasingly important."
