Mount Everest Climb Shared on Internet

The Calgary Herald (April 22, 2000)
By Michelle Simick

Web surfers who only dream of leaving their chat-rooms for the top of Everest or a romp through the desert can now at least hear about it with a click of the mouse.

Well known Calgarian Jamie Clarke, the 9th Canadian to summit Mount Everest and the first westerner in 50 years to complete a 1,200-kilometre camel crossing of Arabia's Empty Quarter, took part in a speakers forum last month that is now being broadcast via the Internet.

Clarke said his speech deals mostly with his two trips but goes beyond basic entertainment.

"I am hoping people will come away - and I don't want to sound grandiose - with a sense of inspiration to undertake their own adventure, whether it be physical, spiritual or mental."

He emphasized this does not mean everyone should climb a mountain, but rather, learn to apply the same sense of motivation to their daily lives.

"I want to leave not only a legacy of inspiration behind, but also the tools to succeed... including the permission to fail."

While Clarke said he doesn't think human interaction, particularly the mood and energy of a room he is speaking to, can be replaced, he hopes viewers can take something positive away from the Internet version.

"(The Internet) is a wonderful tool in that it gives access to that which was previously inaccessible. So hopefully some will get some entertainment out of it and maybe even learn something if we're lucky."

Martin Perelmuter, President of Speakers' Spotlight, a Toronto-based company that organized the Speakers 2000 forum, said the forum gathered five fascinating national personalities to show that Canada really does have its own great speakers and to raise money for charity along the way.

They wanted Clarke on board, Perelmuter said, because he has a way of energizing others. "Jamie's one of the best speakers in North America... He talks about his climb on Mount Everest and his journey through the desert, among other things, and it's a very inspirational message and has practical applications for people in business."

Virtuecast.com employees donated time, equipment and expertise to put on the Webcast of the forum, which raised enough money to send 100 children with cancer to a Toronto Raptors basketball game.

The forum included Hana Gartner, one of Canada's top journalists, Ellie Rubin, National Post columnist and author of a best-selling book, Daniel Richler, the Gemini-award-winning host of CBC Newsworld's Big Life, and Terry Evanshen, Canadian Football League Hall of Famer.

The Webcast will run until May 21 at www.speakers.ca, where donations can be made, or at the website www.virtuecast.com.
