At Bridges to Business symposium - Don't Quit Entrepreneurs ToldThe Mississauga News (Nov 13, 2002)The secret to finding success for any entrepreneur is not letting rejection get them down, according to Speakers' Spotlight owners Farah and Martin Perelmuter. The couple were the keynote speakers at last week's Bridges to Better Business symposium hosted by the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) at the Mississauga Convention Centre. Speakers' Spotlight recently made Profit Magazine's list of 100 fastest growing companies in Canada, ranked at number 29 (June 2002 issue). When the couple started out with their business which supplies celebrity and expert speakers, Martin said the first thing he learned was, "you have to be prepared for people to say 'no'. "But what I found is that if you are polite, they will give you a few minutes of their time. "The worst thing that can happen is they hang up." Successful in their own fields, the Perelmuters quit their jobs to start Speakers' Spotlight. Martin, who was a lawyer, said, "the day I graduated from law school I quit the law society. It was not a gesture of some kind. I just didn't want to remain a lawyer and know I could fall back on that." He said that when it is all said and done, every business person should expect to be judged and assessed by how they handle themselves. Using the examples of CBC sportscaster Ron McLean and Argonaut president Michael "Pinball" Clemons, he said, "they prove that it is more important to be known by people for what you are than who you are. "Over the long term, all we have is our reputation and the way to keep that is by keeping your promises." According to MBEC manager, Heidi Brown, the objective of Bridges to Better Business was, "to bring entrepreneurs face-to-face with experienced business owners and business professionals to share information and receive business advice." Held in conjunction with the federal and provincial governments, the luncheon address was followed by two round-table mentoring sessions with business experts. Participants had the opportunity to choose two business topics and sit around the table with the experts who offered advice.
